CELEBRATING HSUVI WOMEN IN MARCH 2024
By Peter Tonain Ngong
The International Women’s Day 2024 being commemorated under the theme: “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” is at the corner with the plights of HSUVI (Hope Social Union for the Visually Impaired) women brought to the limelight.
Memorializing this year with a focus on addressing economic disempowerment within a sub campaign theme to “Inspire Inclusion”, tens of HSUVI women living with visual impairments though seemingly abandoned to themselves by a cross-section of the society, hierarchy and sometimes by family members are not relenting in any way to combat economic disempowerment that has been bedeviling the doorsteps of most of them, amidst the sociopolitical brouhaha in the two English-speaking regions of the country.
Considering that people rarely invest in them, many have not folded their hands but have been accelerating progress by emerging with many a self-motivating initiative for the provision of their demanding daily needs and those of their progenies. These women have continued to leave indelible marks mostly in the private sector via the production of assorted craft articles, detergents, baking and pastries, venturing in varied business ventures, the music industry and a lot more that are still begging for public attention and wide publicity in order to catapult them to fame.
Epitomizing just two of the women this March 8, 2024, Nawain Yila Elizabeth of Boyo Division who is a mother of five and a grandmother of four; alongside miss Mbu Charlotte of Donga-and-Mantung extraction who is a young mother of one, these duo are currently reputed for making bags, bangles, belts, key holders, necklaces, slippers and sacramental like Rosaries out of decorative beads. The former who doubles as the Women’s Representative of the organization is serving as the principal expert trainer of all the men and women alike. Meanwhile the latter is fast gaining grounds as an emergent gospel artist.
That said “disability is not inability”; therefore, approach the HSUVI head office at Mile 4 Nkwen on daily basis during working hours or call 653401980 / 699239571 / 677362657 or write to info@hsuvi.org for more decent services offered by the HSUVI women at affordable costs.
